Short answer: not every cloud-storage service lets you protect arbitrary local folders in the same way. Dropbox Backup, Google Drive for desktop and pCloud Backup can all protect selected folders that live outside the provider's normal cloud-drive folder. OneDrive's built-in folder-backup workflow is centered on a defined set of important Windows or macOS folders, while iCloud Drive's automatic Mac folder feature is specifically built around Desktop and Documents rather than arbitrary local paths.

The important catch is that “backs up a folder” does not automatically mean “creates an immutable second copy.” Several of these products continuously reflect local changes into the cloud. If you delete or overwrite something locally, that change can also reach the cloud, with recovery depending on Trash, version history, account rewind or a separate backup system.

That distinction is where most users make the wrong decision. If you are trying to protect D:\Projects, a Lightroom export folder, tax archives, a client-work directory or an external SSD, the real question is not simply whether the provider has a button labelled Backup. The question is:

Can it protect the folder where it already lives, what happens after a deletion, and how easy is it to recover an older state?

The five services use three very different folder models

Before comparing brands, separate these three architectures:

  1. Cloud-drive folder / virtual drive — files live inside the provider's cloud namespace.
  2. Two-way sync — a local folder and cloud folder mirror each other's changes.
  3. Computer-folder backup — you select an existing local folder and the cloud service watches it from where it already lives.

Those models can look similar in Finder or File Explorer, but their failure modes are different.

A user who simply wants “my Projects folder protected” often does not want to move Projects into Dropbox, OneDrive or iCloud Drive. They want the existing path to remain where applications expect it, while a remote copy is maintained automatically.

That is exactly why folder-level backup support matters.

This table exposes the real competitive split.

Dropbox and Google Drive are much more capable here than many comparison sites imply. If your only requirement is “protect an existing folder without moving it,” both can already do that.

Where pCloud becomes more interesting is not exclusivity. It is workflow separation.

Dropbox Backup: strong folder coverage, including external drives

Dropbox's current Backup documentation says Dropbox Backup can protect files and folders from the computer and external drives. Its July 2026 overview says you can select files and folders from the computer's home folder, and Dropbox's setup documentation separately confirms support for external drives.

That makes Dropbox one of the strongest competitors in this specific comparison.

For a user with:

  • ~/Documents/Client Work
  • a local photo archive
  • an attached external SSD
  • existing applications that expect those paths

Dropbox Backup can protect the data without forcing the working copy into the ordinary Dropbox folder.

But do not mentally upgrade this into an air-gapped backup. Dropbox says subsequent changes are reflected in Backup. That is useful because the copy stays current, but it also means your recovery design still depends on Dropbox's retention and restore mechanisms.

Choose Dropbox here if…

Choose Dropbox if your team already lives in Dropbox, external-drive backup matters, and you want a mature mainstream desktop workflow without adding another storage provider.

Do not switch to pCloud just because Dropbox can back up arbitrary folders

That would be a weak reason to migrate. Dropbox already clears that requirement.

The migration question starts when you also care about virtual-drive storage, long-term subscription cost, Linux support, explicit EU/US account region choice, or keeping Backup and Sync conceptually separated inside one storage-first product.

Google Drive: “Folders from your computer” is more capable than many users realize

Google Drive for desktop can sync selected folders from your computer. Google's advanced documentation says these computer folders use mirroring. That is different from the Stream mode used for My Drive.

This distinction matters.

If you add a local folder under Folders from your computer, you are not turning that folder into a space-saving streamed Drive. You are maintaining a local folder and synchronizing its contents to Google Drive.

Google also documents permissions for locations such as Desktop, Documents, Downloads, removable volumes and network volumes on macOS. Its Drive for desktop documentation notes that backed-up USB devices can appear separately and remain streamable from the Drive side.

Google Drive therefore works well for users who already depend on Google Workspace and want existing computer folders represented in the Google ecosystem.

But the architecture is still Google-centric: My Drive can Stream or Mirror, while local computer folders use a different mirrored path.

A 2026 change worth knowing: Google Photos backup moved out of Drive for desktop

Google ended Drive for desktop support for Google Photos backup on August 10, 2026. The company told users to reselect photo/video backup folders in the newer Google Photos workflow instead.

That change is a useful reminder that “Google Drive backup” and “Google Photos backup” are no longer the same control surface.

Choose Google Drive here if…

Choose Google Drive if your real priority is Google Workspace integration and you want selected computer folders mirrored into that ecosystem.

If your files are mostly Office-style documents, collaborative assets and shared project folders, switching away just to gain another Backup tab may create more friction than value.

iCloud Drive: excellent Apple integration, but this is not a general-purpose arbitrary-folder backup system

Apple's current macOS documentation is very explicit about what its built-in automatic folder feature does: you can put Desktop and Documents into iCloud Drive.

When enabled, those folders move into iCloud Drive and sync across your Apple devices. Apple also warns that if another cloud provider is managing Desktop and Documents, you should disable that competing management before enabling iCloud Desktop & Documents.

That is good Apple-platform integration. It is not the same product shape as Dropbox Backup or pCloud Backup.

If your important data lives in:

  • ~/Projects
  • /Volumes/Archive/Photos
  • a custom media folder
  • an application-specific project path

there is no general iCloud setting that says “watch any folder I choose and back it up in place.”

Apple's own Mac backup guidance still recommends Time Machine for full Mac backup, with iCloud Drive described as a place to store files rather than a replacement for full-system backup.

Choose iCloud here if…

Choose iCloud when your requirement is really Apple-device continuity for Desktop, Documents, Photos and app data, not a configurable cross-platform folder-backup engine.

For an all-Apple household, that integration can matter more than arbitrary folder selection.

OneDrive: strong Windows integration, but built-in folder protection is deliberately opinionated

OneDrive's folder-backup experience is built around “important folders.” Microsoft's current support documentation lists standard locations including Desktop, Documents, Pictures and, depending on the Windows backup surface, Music and Videos.

That works extremely well for the classic Windows migration problem: sign into a new PC and your familiar user folders come back through OneDrive.

The limitation appears when your data does not live in Microsoft's expected user-folder structure.

Microsoft's Choose Folders documentation explicitly says folders that are not already in OneDrive — including an external USB drive — cannot simply be included in normal OneDrive sync.

So if your real working set is:

  • D:\Video Projects
  • E:\Client Archives
  • a portable SSD
  • a bespoke application directory

OneDrive's built-in “Manage backup” flow is less flexible than Dropbox Backup, Google Drive computer folders or pCloud Backup.

Choose OneDrive here if…

Choose OneDrive if Windows + Microsoft 365 integration is the dominant requirement and your important data already lives in the standard folders OneDrive is designed to protect.

That is a very large group of users. The limitation only becomes painful when your filesystem is more customized than Microsoft's folder model assumes.

pCloud: the advantage is not “Backup exists” — it is that Backup, Sync and Drive are separate tools

pCloud's current Backup documentation says the desktop app can automatically protect selected folders and lets you choose additional folders beyond the default common locations.

On its own, that does not beat Dropbox or Google Drive. Both already provide flexible computer-folder protection.

The more useful pCloud advantage is that the desktop product exposes three distinct storage behaviors:

  • pCloud Drive — a virtual drive for cloud-first files that do not need a permanent local copy;
  • Sync — a two-way mirrored relationship for folders you need locally and offline;
  • Backup — automatic protection of selected existing computer folders.

That separation matters for people whose storage library has outgrown one simple sync folder.

Imagine a creator with:

  • 3 TB of old finished video in long-term cloud storage;
  • 180 GB of current projects that must stay available offline;
  • a local Documents/Contracts folder that should be continuously protected;
  • an external SSD used for one-time archive ingestion.

With pCloud, the intended architecture can be:

  1. old archive → pCloud Drive;
  2. current projects → Sync;
  3. Contracts → Backup;
  4. external SSD ingestion → Uploads.

That is a more compelling reason to consider pCloud than the generic statement “pCloud has backup.”

But pCloud Backup is still not an immutable backup

This is the caveat that matters most.

pCloud's help documentation says changes to selected Backup folders are updated in pCloud. It also states that deleted items move through the account's Trash and can be restored while still inside the applicable retention window.

So pCloud Backup is not equivalent to a write-once archive, immutable object storage bucket, disconnected disk or snapshot system that cannot be altered by normal user actions.

The same mental correction applies to much of consumer cloud “backup.”

A strong data-protection design should still ask:

  • Can ransomware encrypt the source and cause encrypted versions to upload?
  • Can accidental deletion propagate into the cloud state?
  • How many days of history do I actually have?
  • Can I rewind a whole folder/account after a mass change?
  • Do I have a second independent copy outside this account?

pCloud's Revisions and Rewind improve the recovery story, and its optional Extended File History can extend recoverability to 365 days. But history is not the same as an independent backup copy.

That is why we still recommend a 3-2-1-style mindset for irreplaceable data rather than treating any single sync-capable cloud account as your only protection layer.

Which service is best for each folder-backup scenario?

Scenario 1: “I just want Desktop and Documents protected on my Mac”

Best fit: iCloud if you are Apple-first.

You are solving exactly the problem Apple designed Desktop & Documents in iCloud Drive to solve. Adding another provider may be unnecessary unless you also want an independent copy.

Scenario 2: “I want my Windows Desktop/Documents/Pictures to follow me to a new PC”

Best fit: OneDrive.

Microsoft's integration is the least disruptive if you already use Windows and Microsoft 365.

Scenario 3: “I need to back up arbitrary folders and an external drive”

Best fit: Dropbox is extremely competitive here.

Dropbox Backup directly supports computer files/folders and external drives. If you already pay for Dropbox, there may be no operational reason to migrate.

Scenario 4: “I want arbitrary computer folders inside Google Workspace”

Best fit: Google Drive for desktop.

Its Folders from your computer model is well suited to users who already need Google Drive collaboration.

Scenario 5: “I have several different storage jobs and I do not want one sync model controlling all of them”

Best fit to investigate: pCloud.

This is the user pCloud's architecture fits unusually well: cloud-first archive + selective local sync + existing-folder backup + one-time uploads in one storage product.

The pCloud decision becomes stronger when your archive is permanent

Many people discover this problem because their filesystem has become too large and too important to reorganize casually.

If you have reached the stage where:

  • you maintain terabytes of long-term files;
  • only a fraction need to stay on the laptop;
  • some local folders must remain exactly where applications expect them;
  • you want a separate Backup workflow for those folders;
  • and you expect to keep paying for cloud capacity for years;

then the commercial question is no longer only “which app can back up Documents?”

It becomes:

Which storage model do I want to keep living with for the next several years?

That is where pCloud's combination of virtual Drive, Sync, Backup and optional Lifetime pricing starts to matter more than any one feature in isolation.

The remaining decision

Decide whether you need one sync folder — or separate Drive, Sync and Backup roles.

If your files now fall into different groups — cloud-only archive, offline working set and local folders that must stay where they are — pCloud is worth checking because those jobs do not all have to use the same storage mode.

What not to do before changing providers

Do not start a migration by deleting or moving the source folder simply because the new cloud copy looks complete.

Use this order instead:

  1. verify the cloud-side file count and recent files;
  2. open a sample of large and important files from the cloud;
  3. confirm the newest edits exist remotely;
  4. check what a deletion does in the new provider;
  5. confirm Trash/version-history retention;
  6. only then change the old sync or backup relationship.

This is especially important when switching between sync, mirror, backup and virtual-drive modes. Those terms are not interchangeable, and deleting what looks like a duplicate folder too early is one of the easiest ways to turn a migration into a recovery incident.

Bottom line

If the question is only “which cloud can protect a folder without making me move it into the main sync directory?”, the answer is broader than pCloud marketing would suggest:

  • Dropbox Backup: yes, and external-drive support is a real strength;
  • Google Drive: yes, through Folders from your computer;
  • iCloud: not as a general arbitrary-folder backup product; primarily Desktop & Documents for this use case;
  • OneDrive: excellent for designated important folders, less flexible for arbitrary paths and external USB folders;
  • pCloud: yes, with the added architectural advantage that Backup sits beside a separate virtual Drive and separate Sync workflow.

For users with a simple ecosystem, the incumbent can remain the better choice.

For users whose storage has split into archive, active work and protected local folders, the unfinished decision is different: do you still want one cloud-sync model doing every job?

That is the point at which pCloud deserves a serious look.
