Short answer: the five services do not all mean the same thing when they say your photos and videos are "in the cloud." Dropbox, OneDrive, iCloud Photos and pCloud can preserve original media files, but previews and streaming copies may be rendered, transcoded or optimized for viewing. Google is the service where the distinction is most dangerous to ignore: Google Photos can store uploads in Original quality, but its Storage saver mode deliberately compresses supported photos and videos. Once the only cloud copy has been reduced to Storage saver quality, the original cannot simply be reconstructed from that compressed version.

The key mistake is assuming that a lower-quality preview means your original file has been changed. In many cloud products, the provider stores the original file and separately generates a thumbnail, preview or streaming representation. In other products or modes, the upload itself can be converted or compressed.

For a casual phone user, that difference may be invisible for years. For a photographer, videographer, designer or anyone keeping irreplaceable family media, it changes the entire storage decision.

The real question is not "Does the website preview look compressed?" It is "Can I later download the same original-resolution, original-format file I intended to archive?"

First separate four different things people call "compression"

Before comparing providers, separate these four mechanisms:

  1. Stored-original preservation — the cloud keeps the uploaded file at its original quality and format.
  2. Preview generation — the website creates a smaller JPEG, thumbnail or rendered preview while the stored file remains unchanged.
  3. Streaming transcode — a video is converted temporarily or into derived streaming chunks so it plays efficiently, while the original downloadable file remains available.
  4. Upload-time conversion or compression — the cloud intentionally stores a reduced or converted version instead of the original you started with.

Only the fourth case is automatically destructive to archive fidelity.

That is why screenshots of a blurry browser preview prove almost nothing. A 4K video may stream at a lower bitrate while the original 4K file still sits untouched in storage. Conversely, an attractive photo app can show a perfectly acceptable image even though the only cloud copy has already been compressed.

The important commercial point is that pCloud is not uniquely capable of keeping originals. iCloud Photos, OneDrive, Dropbox and Google Photos in Original quality can also preserve high-quality media. The reason pCloud can still be the better archive for some users is structural: it behaves more like long-term file storage than like a tightly coupled photo-library ecosystem, and it can combine that model with pCloud Drive, mobile Automatic Upload and Lifetime storage.

Google: the biggest quality trap is confusing Google Drive with Google Photos

Google deserves the most careful treatment because two different products sit under the same Google account storage pool.

Google Drive: ordinary file storage

If you upload a RAW file, TIFF, JPEG, MOV or MP4 to Google Drive as an ordinary file, the relevant model is file storage. Google Drive may render previews, but the user is managing a file in Drive rather than choosing a Google Photos backup-quality mode.

This is very different from Google Photos.

Google Photos: Original quality vs Storage saver

Google Photos currently exposes multiple backup-quality modes. The important two for archive decisions are:

  • Original quality — stores photos and videos at the quality in which they were captured or uploaded.
  • Storage saver — reduces file size using Google's compression rules for eligible media.

The dangerous part is not that Storage saver exists. It is that users can mistake it for a reversible display setting.

It is not.

Google's current help material and support guidance make the operational consequence clear: if the cloud copy has already been compressed into Storage saver quality and the original no longer exists elsewhere, switching the setting to Original quality does not magically recreate the lost detail. Future uploads can use Original quality, and in some workflows Google may re-upload originals still present on the device, but a compressed cloud-only copy is not a substitute for the original.

Who should still choose Google Photos?

Google Photos is often the stronger product if your priority is:

  • AI-assisted photo search;
  • automatic albums and organization;
  • cross-device phone photo management;
  • Google ecosystem integration;
  • easy sharing rather than file-system style archiving.

If you use it, the discipline is simple: for irreplaceable originals, confirm the backup-quality setting before treating Google Photos as your archive.

If you want the media to remain plain files that are easy to move between providers later, ordinary Google Drive or a file-storage-first provider may be conceptually cleaner.

iCloud Photos: Optimize Storage does not mean Apple compressed the cloud original

Apple's wording causes a different misunderstanding.

When Optimize iPhone Storage or Optimize Mac Storage is enabled, Apple can keep smaller, space-saving copies on the device. That can make it look as though iCloud itself only stores the reduced version.

Apple's current documentation says the opposite: the full-resolution photos and videos remain in iCloud, while the device can retain smaller versions when local space is needed. Apple also lets users download Unmodified Originals from iCloud.com.

That distinction matters:

  • smaller device copy ≠ smaller iCloud master;
  • optimized local storage ≠ destructive cloud compression;
  • preview quality ≠ archive quality.

iCloud's real trade-off is not image quality

For Apple-heavy households, iCloud Photos is extremely strong because it is deeply integrated with the Photos library, camera roll, edits, albums and device storage optimization.

The drawback for an archive buyer is ecosystem coupling. If your long-term goal is to treat 3 TB of photos and videos as portable files independent of a specific photo-library application, the iCloud Photos model can feel less transparent than a normal file hierarchy.

That does not make iCloud worse. It makes it optimized for a different identity: Apple photo-library user first, generic file archivist second.

OneDrive: original-format preservation is stronger than many people assume

OneDrive is often treated as an Office storage product, but Microsoft's current iOS documentation is explicit about an important photo-quality behavior: OneDrive uploads HEIF photos in their original HEIF format rather than automatically converting them to JPG, specifically to preserve image quality and reduce unnecessary storage overhead.

That is a useful signal for archive-oriented users. It shows that OneDrive's mobile photo workflow can preserve the original format instead of forcing compatibility conversion.

As with other services, the web preview is not the file itself. A browser may render a compatible preview, but the user can still download the stored file.

Where OneDrive wins

Choose OneDrive if:

  • Windows and Microsoft 365 are already central to your workflow;
  • your photo archive is part of a broader Documents/Desktop/Pictures backup strategy;
  • you want Files On-Demand integrated with Windows;
  • family members already use Microsoft 365 Family.

Where pCloud starts to look cleaner

If your media archive is the main job — especially if it is several terabytes, cross-platform, and expected to remain for many years — the value of Microsoft 365's broader software bundle may become less important than storage architecture and long-term cost.

That is the point where pCloud Lifetime can become relevant. Not because OneDrive destroys image quality, but because the buyer's actual job has changed from "store files inside Microsoft" to "keep a durable independent media archive."

Dropbox: usually file-preserving, but check iPhone conversion settings

Dropbox behaves primarily as file storage, and it supports common photo and video formats including HEIF and HEVC. Its preview system is separate from the underlying downloadable file.

However, Dropbox documents an important iOS Camera Uploads option: users can choose to save HEIF/HEVC uploads as more widely compatible JPG and non-HEVC MOV files. Dropbox explicitly notes that converting HEIF to JPG removes some HEIF features.

This is not Dropbox secretly degrading every image. It is a user-selectable compatibility workflow.

The practical lesson is broader:

If original format matters, inspect camera-upload conversion settings before deleting the phone copy.

For a photographer working with RAW files, Lightroom exports, layered TIFFs and rendered video, Dropbox remains a credible storage and sharing platform. Its biggest strengths are mature sync and collaboration, not a uniquely superior media-archive model.

pCloud: original files remain the archive; playback can be derived

pCloud's documentation makes one particularly useful distinction for video.

Its audio/video player documentation states that uploaded video files are stored on pCloud's servers in their original quality. For playback, pCloud can compress chunks and transcode video into compatible forms so the stream works across devices. When the user downloads the file, pCloud says the video retains its original quality and size.

That is exactly the architecture an archive-minded user should want to understand:

Original file in storage → derived streaming copy for convenience → original file still available for download.

pCloud's mobile apps also provide Automatic Upload for photos and videos, so the service can behave as a phone-media ingestion point rather than requiring every upload to be manual.

This does not make pCloud a replacement for a professional DAM, Lightroom catalog or Apple Photos library. It makes it a comparatively clean place to keep the underlying files.

The overlooked decision: are you archiving a library or archiving files?

This is where many readers realize they were comparing the wrong products.

There are two different jobs:

Job A: manage a photo library

You want:

  • face/object search;
  • albums;
  • memories;
  • edits synced between devices;
  • phone-first browsing;
  • automated photo intelligence.

Google Photos and iCloud Photos are extremely strong here.

Job B: preserve a media archive

You want:

  • original files and filenames;
  • predictable folders;
  • RAW/TIFF/PSD/video master support;
  • easy migration to another provider later;
  • cross-platform access;
  • long-term capacity economics;
  • separation between archive and phone-library UI.

This is where Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive and pCloud become more natural comparisons.

And if your archive is already larger than the SSD inside your laptop, pCloud's virtual-drive model gives it another structural advantage: the archive can remain visible without mirroring all of it locally. A practical 3 TB photographer example

Assume you have:

  • 1.6 TB RAW photos;
  • 600 GB edited JPEG/TIFF exports;
  • 700 GB 4K/6K video masters;
  • 100 GB current working projects;
  • a 1 TB laptop SSD.

The wrong question is:

Which photo app looks nicest?

The better questions are:

  1. Will my original RAW and video master files remain downloadable?
  2. Can I keep most of the 3 TB archive cloud-first instead of filling the SSD?
  3. Do I want phone-library intelligence or plain-file portability?
  4. How much will I pay if I keep this archive for five, eight or ten years?
  5. What second copy protects me if cloud sync or account recovery fails?

For this user:

  • iCloud Photos is strongest if Apple Photos is the real center of the workflow.
  • Google Photos is strongest if search and library intelligence dominate, but Original quality must be deliberate.
  • Dropbox is excellent if collaboration and mature sync matter more than archive economics.
  • OneDrive is excellent if Microsoft 365 is already doing multiple jobs.
  • pCloud becomes unusually attractive when the job is mostly long-term storage of original files, especially when the archive is larger than local storage and the buyer expects to keep roughly the same capacity for years.

Where pCloud's Lifetime model changes the decision

Original-quality preservation by itself is not enough reason to switch. Several competitors already do that well.

The more meaningful pCloud argument appears when three conditions are true:

  1. your archive is already large enough that you know the storage requirement is real;
  2. the requirement is long-lived rather than temporary;
  3. you value a file-storage-first model more than a bundled photo or office ecosystem.

If those are true, the hidden cost of the mainstream model becomes easier to see: you are not paying for one year of cloud storage; you are committing to keep paying as long as the archive exists.

A 3 TB family photo/video archive does not disappear because a subscription renews. In fact, it usually grows.

That is why pCloud Lifetime belongs in this decision. It does not remove capacity limits, and it does not turn pCloud into an immutable backup. What it can remove is the annual storage subscription for a capacity tier you expect to keep using.

If you are already thinking, "I will still need this archive five years from now," you have reached the unfinished part of the decision: is your storage horizon long enough that recurring billing is now the bigger problem than the upfront payment?

Do not treat any synced cloud as your only copy of irreplaceable media

This matters more than every feature comparison above.

If a photo or video exists only in one cloud account, it is not a resilient archive.

Sync services can propagate:

  • accidental deletion;
  • mistaken reorganization;
  • corrupted files;
  • ransomware-encrypted versions;
  • account lockout problems;
  • user error.

Version history and Trash help, but they are retention windows, not a guarantee of permanent recoverability.

For irreplaceable media, use a version of the 3-2-1 principle:

  • working or primary copy;
  • cloud copy;
  • second independent copy, ideally on another medium or provider and preferably offline or otherwise isolated.

Before deleting the originals from your phone or computer, run this verification

Do not trust a thumbnail.

Pick a representative sample:

  • one high-resolution JPEG or HEIF;
  • one RAW photo;
  • one large video master;
  • one file with metadata you care about;
  • one unusual format from your real workflow.

Then:

  1. upload or let the mobile app back it up;
  2. wait until the service reports completion;
  3. download the file to another device or clean folder;
  4. compare filename, extension and file size;
  5. open it in the application you actually use;
  6. check resolution, codec and important metadata;
  7. for high-value archives, compare hashes where the workflow allows it.

Only after that should you treat the cloud copy as verified.

What not to do

Do not judge archive quality from the browser preview

Preview rendering may be lower quality even when the stored master is untouched.

Do not enable Storage saver and assume you can restore the original later

If the original disappears everywhere else, reduced-quality cloud media cannot recreate missing detail.

Do not assume "Optimize Storage" means iCloud keeps only optimized cloud copies

Apple stores the original high-resolution media in iCloud and optimizes device copies.

Do not delete local originals immediately after enabling a new camera-upload workflow

Verify actual downloaded files first, especially if HEIF/HEVC conversion settings exist.

Do not buy Lifetime purely because the label sounds permanent

Confirm that pCloud fits your workflow and that the capacity is large enough. Lifetime solves recurring billing, not capacity growth or backup isolation.

Choose each service for the job it is actually optimized for

Choose Google Photos if...

Your priority is intelligent photo management, search and sharing. Use Original quality when preserving original fidelity matters.

Choose iCloud Photos if...

You live inside Apple hardware and want the most seamless Photos-library experience. Optimize Storage can save device space while keeping originals in iCloud.

Choose Dropbox if...

You want proven cross-platform sync and client collaboration, and you are comfortable managing media as files. Check HEIF/HEVC conversion settings before treating Camera Uploads as an archival ingestion path.

Choose OneDrive if...

Microsoft 365 and Windows already anchor your workflow, and the media archive is one part of a broader file/backup system.

Choose pCloud if...

You recognize yourself in a different pattern: your archive is measured in terabytes, it is likely to exist for years, you want the original files to remain ordinary portable files, and you do not need your cloud provider to be your primary photo-editing or office suite.

That user often thinks the decision is still about image quality. It usually is not. Once all shortlisted providers can preserve the original, the unresolved question becomes who you want to keep paying — and how long you expect the archive to exist.
